About the Role

As a pharmacy technician, you'll assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory, and managing patient records. Pharmacy technician trainees work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist and do not perform duties legally restricted to pharmacists.
Responsibilities
- Patient Population (Clinical Only):
- Engage in population-appropriate communication and provide clear instructions to patients/families regarding treatment.
- Involve family/guardian in patient assessment, treatment, and continuing care.
- Identify physical limitations and behavioral health needs, responding appropriately.
- Interpret population-related data and plan care accordingly, including unique psychological, religious, or cultural needs.
- Administer treatments, medications, or operate equipment safely.
- Recognize and respond to signs of abuse or neglect.
- Procure and Distribute Medication Orders:
- Accept new prescription orders (written, faxed, or electronic) from prescribers or their agents.
- Enter and retrieve information from databases or patient profiles.
- Prepare and affix medication labels; count and pour dangerous drugs under pharmacist supervision.
- Prepare non-sterile compounds, intravenous admixtures, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition safely and accurately.
- Deliver medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas per established schedules.
- Maintain adequate stock of medications and supplies, including ordering, receiving, rotating stock, and restocking dispensing areas.
- Repackage bulk medications into unit-dose packages safely and accurately.
- Contribute to Department Operations:
- Pick up orders, requisitions, and medications for return during delivery rounds.
- Enter charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
- Generate reports and pick lists as required.
- Answer telephones, direct calls, and respond to requests at the window/door; make stat deliveries when needed.
- Organize and prioritize work assignments; maintain logs, records, and documentation.
- Maintain clean, organized pharmacy areas and equipment.
- Quality Improvement:
- Complete and document monthly medication storage area inspections; identify and replace outdated medications.
- Collect data, conduct quality monitors, and complete documentation as assigned.
- Hospital and Department Standards:
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the pharmacy dress code.
- Perform work within specified time frames and adapt to interruptions or changes in workload.
- Work cooperatively with staff; provide orientation and training to new team members.
- Complete required training programs to demonstrate competency in:
- Packaging and labeling of drugs.
- Pharmacy terminology and basic calculations.
- Quality control procedures.
- State and federal statutes, rules, and regulations (e.g., drug processing, record-keeping, confidentiality, security, and storage).
- Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor and seek opportunities to advance through the technician ladder program.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.
- Current certified technician certificate (approved by Ohio BOP).
- Maintain registration and certification throughout employment with UC Health Pharmacy Department.
Qualifications
- Minimum: No experience required.
- Preferred: 1 year of equivalent experience.
