About the role
The Personal Trainer develops and implements individualized workout regimens and conducts fitness assessments for members. The Personal Trainer recruits and obtains personal training clientele at the Greater Cleveland YMCA, helping to provide quality, safe, and healthy programs and services in our community.
Responsibilities
- Designs and implements customized and individualized fitness programs for members based on their current fitness levels, physical challenges, preferences, and goals.
- Delivers safe, effective, fun, and interesting workouts to all fitness-training clients.
- Contacts members within 48 hours of receiving notification of interest and conducts individual meetings to discuss goals, develop personal training plans, and work toward those goals.
- Promotes and sells personal training services through interaction with members.
- Communicates all programs and services offered at the YMCA.
- Encourages member participation in all YMCA programs, including the Annual Campaign and other fundraising events.
- Meets assigned personal training sales and client retention goals.
- Exhibits visibility and approachability at all times.
- Ensures wellness areas are sanitized and clean, and returns all misplaced or used equipment to its proper place.
- Ensures all necessary equipment is available for member use and inspects equipment for safe working order; reports maintenance issues immediately.
- Maintains clear and comprehensive written documentation of each member's program and accurate records in Daxko Engage.
- Starts and ends personal training sessions on time.
- Reports for work as assigned and secures an appropriate substitute when necessary.
- Attends required meetings.
- Conducts fitness assessments and evaluations.
- Designs exercise programs for a variety of participants by combining individual health and fitness goals with assessment results.
- Provides safe and effective instruction on all equipment at the skill level appropriate for each member.
- Demonstrates and teaches Wellness Center policies and etiquette (e.g., wiping down equipment after use, re-racking weights).
- May be required to work as a Wellness Center Attendant, Wellness Consultant, or conduct new member orientation sessions at the respective pay rates for hours determined by Wellness leadership.
- Maintains a varied schedule depending on client and branch needs.
- Acts as a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect, following the YMCA’s reporting process.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
- Current national NCCA-accredited Personal Trainer certification required before date of hire. Exception: Candidates with a BS in Exercise Science or Kinesiology must obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Certification in CPR (Basic Life Support or Professional Rescuer), Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration required within 90 days of hire.
- Completion of Principles of Member Health and Wellness (in LINK) and job-specific technical training within 90 days of hire.
- Maintains all required certifications.

- Ability to conduct scientifically valid fitness assessments and appropriately interpret results.
- Ability to design personalized exercise programs for general populations and individuals with specific concerns (e.g., obesity, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes).
- Effective motivation, communication, interpersonal, and sales skills.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and practicing discernment and tact.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA, upholding its values and ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
