Certified Peer Recovery Specialist - Full Time First Shift

About the role

The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) provides peer-to-peer support services to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. Utilizing lived experiences of recovery and mental health disorders, the CPRS offers emotional support, shares knowledge, teaches skills, provides practical assistance, and connects individuals with resources, opportunities, communities of support, and other people.

The CPRS supports individuals in achieving their self-identified level of recovery, wellness, independence, or personal strengths through face-to-face interactions. Responsibilities include assisting individuals in identifying community-based supports, strengthening natural support systems, and encouraging self-advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Provide active listening, education, and assistive supports to consumers and family members.
• Demonstrate appropriate and ongoing documentation of treatment, progress notes, correspondence, releases of information, etc., in compliance with agency standards and regulations.
• Assist individuals in identifying and connecting with community-based supports and resources.
• Strengthen natural support systems and encourage self-advocacy.
• Adapt to program changes as needed based on evaluations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Certification as a Virginia Peer Recovery Specialist is required.
• DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training is required.
• Registration as a Registered Virginia Peer Recovery Specialist is required within six months of obtaining certification.

Qualifications

• Ability to positively interact with persons with mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities, their family members, agency staff, and community members.
• Good personal management skills, including time management, organization, dependability, and independence.
• Ability to work as a team member with agency staff and others on behalf of recovery initiatives.
• General knowledge and understanding of mental illness, substance use, developmental disabilities, and the principles of recovery.
• Knowledge of support counseling practices and techniques.
• Understanding of the local mental health/substance use disorder systems and available community services, including public, private, and volunteer organizations.
