About the Role
This position provides routine patient care to promote patient comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center and premier West Valley destination for surgical, oncological, cardiovascular, neuroscience, orthopedic, pediatric, and women and infant services. As a Certified Patient Care Assistant (CPCA/CNA/LNA) in Labor & Delivery, you will assist with basic nursing tasks for expecting mothers across three areas:
- Antepartum: Care for high-risk pregnancy patients who may stay for several months until delivery.
- OB Triage: Support in the ER for pregnant patients (HUC/PCA role).
- Labor & Delivery: Handle HUC responsibilities for the floor, including clerical and patient support duties.
Experience in a hospital setting is preferred. The role operates in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with opportunities for learning and growth.
Responsibilities
- Assist with activities of daily living, including hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
- Collect patient specimens and data (vital signs, input/output, etc.) and document in medical records.
- Transport patient specimens and assist with procedures (e.g., blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, monitoring).
- Communicate patient status to caregivers for continuity of care and report abnormalities to licensed professionals.
- Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support unit efficiency (e.g., maintaining patient records, ordering supplies, transcribing physician orders).
- Resolve customer issues or escalate data to appropriate staff.
- Monitor and track electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops).
- Assist with patient transport (e.g., pre/post-operative patients) and OR room turnover, depending on assignment.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in state of practice (required for new hires/transfers; existing Tucson incumbents may have exceptions).
- 1 year of medical clerical experience (preferably in a hospital/physician office) or customer service experience.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy (keyboarding).
- For specific departments: Minimum 85% passing score on ECG/EEG test (identifying lethal cardiac dysrhythmias/epileptiform activity) and completion of an approved interpretation course or on-the-job training.
- For behavioral health roles serving children or Banner Home Care AZ: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (maintained for employment duration) and signed Arizona Criminal History Affidavit.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
- Recent healthcare experience.
- Completion of an approved unit secretary program.
Schedule
- Full-time day shift: 3–12 hour shifts (6:00 AM–6:30 PM).
- Self-scheduling tool available for shift/weekend coverage (no set weekly schedule).
- Weekend rotations required: Every 3rd weekend + holidays (varies annually).
Pay
- Flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
- 18% night shift differential (when applicable).
- Sign-on bonus of $3,000 for Certified/Licensed CNA/LNAs.
