About the role

Banner University Medical Center Tucson is seeking a Certified Patient Care Assistant to join our Medical Surgical Unit/Observation Unit. In this role, you will work alongside dedicated physicians and staff performing state-of-the-art procedures in a nationally recognized, innovative healthcare environment. Our Medical Surgical/Observation Unit cares for patients with stays typically under 48 hours, offering a fast-paced environment where you can gain experience with a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions.

A 12-hour day shift is available (6:00 AM – 6:30 PM every other Sunday). The unit operates with 2 PCAs per shift, focusing on patient care and safety. You will work with adult and geriatric patient populations, including those requiring telemetry monitoring and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) status.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily living activities, including basic hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake to promote patient comfort and health.
  • Collect patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements; document objective data and routine aspects of care.
  • Assist in transporting patient specimens and, based on assignment, transport patients (e.g., pre-operative and post-operative patients to critical care).
  • Recognize and report abnormalities or changes in patient health status to licensed professionals.
  • Promote continuity of care by accurately communicating patient status to other caregivers.
  • Perform procedures and use equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, including blood draws, foley catheter removal, IV removal, EKGs, and Health Unit Coordinator duties.
  • Provide supplies, support, and assistance for clinical procedures under direct supervision.
  • Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support unit efficiency and communication flow.
  • Participate in resolving customer problems or escalate issues to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies; reconcile supply orders upon delivery.
  • Monitor and track electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops) to ensure accountability and functionality.
  • Participate in room turnover and support a fast-paced environment with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Interact professionally with staff, patients, families, and physicians while demonstrating core and leader behaviors daily.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy and keyboarding skills.
  • In California: advanced skills are excluded.
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required for employees at:
    • Banner Behavioral Health Hospital or BTMC Behavioral.
    • BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting serving children.
    • Banner Home Care/Hospice or Boswell Skilled Nursing Facility.
  • State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card required for employees at Banner MD Anderson on the Banner University Medical Center Phoenix campus (for the Whole Family Counseling Program).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent healthcare experience.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

Pay

Enjoy a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable.

Schedule

Day Shift: 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM every other Sunday (12-hour shift).
