Certified Ophthalmic Technician On-Call Float

About the role

This position will float to all eye care clinics including Bloomington, St. Paul Como, St. Paul Specialty Center, Arden Hills, Woodbury, and Apple Valley.

Responsibilities

  • Record patient’s presenting complaint and associated symptoms, obtain a complete medical and ophthalmic history; reconcile meds, document and update allergies.
  • Perform lens neutralization.
  • Accurately refract.
  • Plot visual fields using either the Goldman perimeter or automated perimeter.
  • Obtain intraocular pressure measurements with different methods: Goldman applanation, tonopen and I-care.
  • Assess pupillary functions.
  • Check for color vision defects.
  • Take Keratometry readings.
  • Perform basic strabismus evaluations/testing using prisms, Maddox rods, cover testing, Hirschberg-Krimsky measurements and examination of ductions and versions.
  • Obtain A-scan and B-scan ultrasound readings.
  • Be able to accurately obtain data for intraocular lens calculations by all methods available.
  • Calibrate and maintain clinical devices.
  • Assist the eye care provider during minor surgery and major surgery.
  • Administer oral and ocular medications as directed by the eye care provider.
  • Explain physician’s orders to include pre-operative and other patient teaching as indicated and/or directed.
  • Photography – Internal and external.
  • Obtain quality OCT’s of Optic Nerve and Retina.
  • Teach/train Ophthalmic/Optometric Assistants.
  • Triage patients both in clinic on the phone or inbox messages.
  • Contact patients with test results.
  • Arrange for urgent consults and additional testing.
  • Review and respond to medication prior authorizations as well as refill requests.
  • Perform any other duties as may be deemed necessary.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • One year (full time equivalent of 2080 hours) or more of ophthalmic technician experience or completion of an accredited technical vocational school ophthalmic technician program.
  • Ophthalmic technician certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCHAPO) or ready for certification for ophthalmic technician by JCHAPO.
  • If hired without the JCAHPO certification, must register for and pass the JCAHPO ophthalmic technician certification test within 12 months of hire date.
  • If not a recent graduate of an accredited technical vocational school, must have completed an online course for certified ophthalmic technicians.
  • Proficiency with computers and keyboarding.

Preferred

  • Formal ophthalmic technician training from an accredited technical/vocational school and a minimum of two-years, full time ophthalmic technician experience in an ophthalmic care setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Must possess manual dexterity, good vision, and be self-mobile.
