Provides quality nursing care to residents in a setting that promotes their rights, dignity, freedom of choice, and individuality.
Responsibilities
- Provides individualized attention and supports residents according to their care plan, contributing to the care planning process with specific observations of residents’ needs and preferences.
- Attends to residents’ personal care needs, including grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, transferring, ambulation, range of motion, and communication.
- Maintains residents’ comfort, privacy, and dignity; interacts warmly to promote a caring environment; tidies rooms and changes bed linen as needed.
- Upholds residents’ rights, promptly reporting any incidents or evidence of abuse or rights violations to the charge nurse or administrator.
- Assists in maintaining a safe, neat, and clean environment; reports environmental deficiencies such as lighting or equipment problems.
- Protects residents’ personal belongings, reports missing items, and participates in locating them.
- Observes and promptly reports changes in residents’ condition or behavior to the Charge Nurse.
- Maintains skin integrity by changing incontinent residents, turning and repositioning immobile residents, and applying moisturizers to prevent pressure ulcers or skin damage.
- Answers residents’ call lights promptly and courteously.
- Performs tasks assigned by the charge nurse, including checking vital signs, weighing residents, applying creams/ointments, and collecting specimens.
- Assists with orienting residents and families to the nursing home on admission and during unit transfers.
- Lifts, moves, and transports residents using proper body mechanics or lifting devices; utilizes wheelchairs, slide boards, walkers, and canes as required.
- Communicates effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
- Escorts residents to appointments (e.g., beauty shop, activities, or church services) and participates in activities as directed.
- Completes documentation of care and other information in PCC according to department policies.
- Adheres to safety and infection control procedures, including hand washing, use of disposable gloves, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
- Attends staff meetings and in-services as requested.
- Answers and directs incoming calls appropriately.
- Performs other tasks as required.
Requirements
- Current Michigan Certified Nurse Aide Certification or completion of a Michigan-approved CNA training program with eligibility to test (certification required within 4 months of hire).
- One year of experience in long-term care, hospice, or healthcare preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics.
- Strong verbal communication skills with residents, staff, and visitors.
- Tolerance for frequent exposure to blood, body tissues, fluids, hazardous materials, infectious diseases, chemicals, and latex or plastic materials used in personal protective equipment.
- Manual dexterity to operate modern office equipment.
- Ability to travel as needed or assigned.
