About the role

As a Certified Medical Laboratory Technician, you will utilize your skills and training to perform tests on samples of blood, urine, and other body fluids to obtain information used in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients' medical situations. You will perform laboratory tests and procedures requiring independent judgment and responsibility with supervision.

You will demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development, interpret age-specific needs, and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures. You will also meet mutually agreed-upon performance goals and display courteous behavior and cooperative relationships with customers and co-workers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in various departments as needed (Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, UA, Micro, Path) based on skill levels.
  • Perform testing on pending laboratory specimens.
  • Perform proficiency testing as needed.
  • Call and document critical values.
  • Follow and perform Quality Control guidelines, documenting all corrective actions as needed.
  • Maintain instruments or equipment (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or as needed).
  • Recognize age-specific differences in expected results from newborns to geriatrics.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on age groups from newborns to geriatrics, if required.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct the problem or immediately notify your supervisor.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or qualification under CLIA guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • National Certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)).
  • One to three years of experience preferred.
  • Each individual performs only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA 88’, Subpart M – Personnel for Nonwaived Testing, sections 493.1423 and 493.1489.
  • Good communication skills and basic computer skills.
