About the role
The Medical Coder is responsible for assigning procedure and diagnosis codes for insurance billing, reviewing claims data, researching and corresponding with insurance companies to resolve issues, and adhering to coding policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Utilize specialized medical classification software to assign procedure and diagnosis codes for insurance billing
- Review claims data to ensure compliance with legal and insurance rules and obtain necessary signatures and authorizations
- Conduct medical records research and correspond with insurance companies and healthcare professionals to address denied claims
- Apply knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9-CM, HCPCS, CPT, and CMS rules to resolve complex coding issues
- Answer coding questions and review clinical documentation to ensure it meets required codes
- Perform related duties as requested
- Uphold the organization's ethics and customer service standards
Requirements
- Education: Certificate or associate's degree in medical coding/CPC. Additional certifications like CPC, CPC-Hospital, CPC-Payer, CIRCC, CPMA are preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 1 year coding experience, preferably in psychiatric services.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9-CM, anatomy and physiology, computer data entry, and medical law, privacy, and ethics. Familiarity with CMS rules and regulations, HCPCS, CPT, and healthcare reimbursement methods. Critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Qualifications
- Advanced PC skills including Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, and financial software (Kronos a plus)
- Excellent communication skills, ability to handle sensitive situations, and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to analyze and solve complex coding issues, perform mathematical computations, and prioritize tasks
