Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones
  • Greet patients
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Fill out insurance forms
  • Handle correspondence
  • Schedule appointments
  • Arrange for hospital admissions
  • Arrange for laboratory services
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping
  • Absorb and explain treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures
  • Take medical histories and recording vital signs
  • Prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform basic laboratory tests
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies
  • Sterilize medical instruments
  • Promote patient/family understanding of the educational content and their involvement in the plan of care
  • Document in patient record
  • Administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorize drug refills as directed
  • Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy
  • Draw blood
  • Prepare patients for x-rays, tests and procedures
  • Take electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures/staples
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings

Requirements

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program (Level I), or a medical assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES (Level II and III)
  • Experience: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant (Level II), or at least 3 years of clinical experience (Level III)
  • Certification: Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required (Level I-III)
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good customer service skills, understanding of sterile techniques, special procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene, health and safety precautions, infection control procedures, and working knowledge of medical terminology

Qualifications

  • High school or GED graduation required (all levels)
  • BLS required (all levels)
  • Age-specific competencies
  • Daily clinic preparation process; registration, scheduling, charge posting, order entry
  • Able to document and communicate pertinent information
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff
  • Typing skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology (Level II and III)
