Certified Lab Assistant

About the role

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for all pre-analytical aspects of specimen collection, receiving specimens, handling of specimens, and processing specimens to include sending specimens to reference laboratories. This includes transferring ordered tests to the LIS (Laboratory Information System) or appropriate lab slips, processing billing information and charging. The Laboratory Assistant is also responsible for the labs’ clerical and phone duties.

Responsibilities

• Transfers ordered tests to the LIS or appropriate lab slips
• Processes billing information and charges
• Handles specimen collection, receiving, and specimen processing
• Performs clerical duties and answers the phone

Requirements

• California Plebotomy License
• Two years experience in dealing with the public

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy
• Laboratory terminology
• Computer keyboard skills
• Proficiency using the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Hospital Information System (HIS)
• Proficiency using the glucometer
• Friendly and encouraging attitude towards all patients
• Maintains patient waiting room while performing tasks inside the lab proper, courteously informing if there is a wait
• Promptly answers the phone identifying him/herself and the Department

Skills

• Demonstrates proficiency using the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and the Hospital Information System (HIS)
• Demonstrates proficiency using the glucometer
• Communicates effectively with patients
• Keeps the patient waiting room organized and informed
• Answers phones professionally and identifies department

Pay

Compensation Range: $28.24 - $40.26 / hour
