About the role
This job assumes responsibility for providing medical/clinical genetic counseling services to individuals and families with a known or suspected inherited condition. Provides individualized information and supportive counseling, coordinates genetic testing, evaluates, and determines the needs of the individual and families, and works with the Physician to make appropriate referrals based on the evaluations.
Responsibilities
- Conducts thorough medical history, including detailed family histories
- Collects and reviews all lab data and medical records of patient to establish patient's current health status
- Utilizes clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of health status
- Gathers and integrates patient data to assist in the development of an individualized plan of care, utilizing appropriate reference material
- Coordinates handling of patient specimens with appropriate laboratory standards
- Maintains knowledge of growth and development
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education: Master's degree from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling
Work Experience: 1 year of experience as a genetic counselor
Certifications: Certified Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American Board of Medical Genetics
Skills
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard
- Strong interpersonal skills
