About the role
A Certified Cancer Registrar identifies, registers, analyzes, and reports cancer registry information to support cancer surveillance, treatment planning, research, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Complies with American College of Surgeons standards for cancer registry operations, including accurate collection and analysis of reportable cancer diagnosis data.
- Abstracts cancer registry data sets in accordance with established national standards and reporting requirements.
- Obtains, updates, and maintains ongoing follow-up information for all patients within the cancer registry database.
- Submits required reports monthly to the Illinois Department of Public Health, annually to the National Cancer Data Base, and provides additional reports to professional organizations as requested.
- Maintains active Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential through required continuing education, in-services, and professional meetings to ensure competency and professional development.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Medical Director or Administrative Director.
Requirements
- Certification as a CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) is required.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Two years previous experience in cancer registry.
- Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, typing, and basic computer skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and organize and prioritize work.
