About the Role

The Certified Medication Aide assists in administering medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the nurse supervisor or charge nurse, and the Residential Care Coordinator (RCC). Medication administration follows established nursing standards, community policies, procedures, and state requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with the Community’s personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Comply with the nursing department’s policies and procedures.
  • Report witnessed or reported allegations of resident abuse/neglect immediately to the Executive Director, RCC, Nurse Supervisor, or Charge Nurse.
  • Treat residents, family members, visitors, and team members with respect and dignity.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident and family information.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Report any complaints/grievances made by residents to the RCC, Nurse Supervisor, or Charge Nurse per policy.
  • Participate and cooperate with any Community surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
  • Protect resident privacy when administering medication; knock before entering the resident’s room.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications commonly ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director.
  • Document and report errors in medication administration immediately upon discovery.
  • Ensure all medications administered are properly labeled and stored according to Community policy.
  • Complete medication charting per Community policy and procedure.
  • Assist with following Community policies regarding the destruction of medications.
  • Assist in documenting and removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Follow Community procedures for drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
  • Follow Community procedures for holding medications for residents who are out of the Community or per physician’s order.
  • Honor the resident’s right to refuse medications and document refusals with reasons.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
  • Promptly notify the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any refusals or reactions to medications.
  • Ensure no medication is administered without a written, signed, and dated order from a licensed physician.
  • Verify resident identity before administering medication.
  • Follow the Community’s procedures for residents who self-administer medications and assist in monitoring/documenting such self-administration.
  • Notify the nurse when medication refills are needed.
  • Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms used in medication administration.
  • Use personal protective equipment when exposed to blood or body fluids.
  • Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to the RCC/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse immediately.
  • Follow established safety precautions in performing all duties.
  • Wash hands before and after performing any service for the resident.
  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per Community policies.
  • Assist residents with daily hygiene, toileting, and other daily living activities.
  • Assist Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) with daily duties when needed.

Requirements

  • Valid Certified Medication Aide (CMA) certification in good standing with the State.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Ability to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to meet general health requirements set forth by State regulations and Company policy, including medical and physical examinations.
  • Awareness of body movements required during routine performance of duties (e.g., lifting, carrying, reaching).
  • Ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and occasionally hostile individuals.
  • Ability to see and hear or use prosthetics to enable these senses to function adequately.
