Essential Job Duties

  • Interprets in various settings, including classrooms, recess, specials, and speech sessions for deaf or hard-of-hearing students throughout the school day.
  • Facilitates communication among deaf and hard-of-hearing students, their hearing peers, mainstream classroom teachers, and other school personnel using American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
  • Translates spoken English to ASL for students to ensure effective communication and provides instructional support within classroom settings.
  • Attends field trips, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, action team gatherings, and other approved activities to offer interpreting services.
  • Affords assistance to the Coordinator of Deaf Education with tasks as needed while engaging in critical thinking and problem-solving to support educational needs.
  • Educates consumers on deafness and hearing loss as required while maintaining an impartial attitude and ensuring confidentiality in line with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics.
  • Remains current in the field of educational interpreting through participation in workshops, professional meetings with colleagues, and reviewing relevant literature.
  • Performs ongoing maintenance of credentials by providing evidence to the Local Education Agency (LEA), as requested.
  • Utilizes selective attention during interpretation tasks to focus on relevant information while ignoring distractions.
  • Provides insight on process improvements and successful outcomes and makes recommendations for solutions as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in any field from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission approved accredited college or university.
  • If the degree requirement is not met, an initial five (5)-year license may be considered and the degree requirement must be met for renewal and continued employment.
  • Pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at level 3.5 or higher within five (5) years preceding the date of application.
  • Must hold a valid certification in interpretation through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or an assessment score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
  • Must be eligible for a Georgia Professional Standards Commission Clearance Certificate.
  • Must pass the GACE Educator Ethics test.
