Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Central Laboratory specialty departments (blood bank, flow cytometry and molecular) on duties as needed.
- Manage inbound specimens from the clinic sites, thoroughly sorting the coolers, checking manifests, and releasing specimens into the Central Laboratory.
- Register external patients directly into the laboratory information system and keep the laboratory information system uniform, organized, and up to date.
- Answer the lab phone and Daily Lab Safety Communication chat and assist callers with their questions and requests.
- Assist the medical technologists to find and account for specimens and pending logs.
- Assist the medical technologists to unpack inventory shipments.
- Absent from bone marrow biopsies.
- Provide phlebotomy duties as needed.
- Maintain lab supply inventory and complete order forms for needed supplies.
- Complete tasks as laboratory leadership deems appropriate.
- Able to perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to specimen ordering, collecting, processing, and packaging for send out testing.
- Able to interact with peers and other departments in a manner that is viewed as having a positive effect on patient services and CHC staff morale.
- Interact effectively with patients and family members demonstrating sensitivity in regard to cultural diversity, age specific needs, confidentiality, and all abilities.
- Functions as a team member by expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center.
Job Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Two years related work experience including phlebotomy.
- Other: Exceptional people skills in the medical field. Ability to maintain composure during extremely busy times. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently at a fast pace with minimal supervision. Able to maintain confidentiality.
