About the role
The Center Aide assists with the daily operations of the Head Start and Early Head Start Program. Work hours may be adjusted based on supervisor and/or Executive Director authorization.
Responsibilities
- Reports to work Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Must notify supervisor before 6:45 a.m. if unable to work.
- Mandatory reporter of all incidents of child abuse and neglect.
- Handles confidential information with discretion concerning all children.
- Attends training classes and Head Start in-service orientation.
- Must be able to report to work as scheduled.
- Limit discussion of children, families, and staff; discuss only factual information.
- Avoid gossip and inappropriate labels; refrain from gossiping about staff's personal/professional status.
- Do not talk about children disparagingly in front of other children.
- Willing to establish nurturing bonds with children and support parents in their role as primary educators.
- Serves as a substitute in various roles:
- Teacher's Aide/Bus Monitor - assists with supervision, development, and implementation of program activities and functions, supporting staff and parent volunteers.
- Teacher's Aide/Bus Monitor - accompanies children on the bus and ensures safety measures are taken.
- Assistant Cook - assists in preparing food and cleaning up after meals.
- Office Assistant - answers phones, greets visitors, directs them, and runs copies.
- Infant and Toddler Substitute Teacher - assists with supervision, development, and implementation of program activities and functions.
- Maintenance/Custodian - cleans classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and common areas, and replenishes supplies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED; knowledge and experience in early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Enrolled in a Child Development Associate (CDA) program and completed the CDA program within 1 year, and enrolled in an associate degree program in Early Childhood Education or related field.
- One year experience working with pre-school age children in a classroom setting.
- Knowledge and experience in child development and early childhood education.
- Ability to lift heavy objects.
Physical Requirements
Must be capable of heavy lifting.

- Confidentiality maintenance.
- Verbal communication and personal qualifications to deal with staff and individuals/groups with varying abilities.
- Able to accept directions and learn under supervision.
- Flexibility and ability to work in a demanding environment.
- Teamwork and cooperation.
