Supervised by Dr. Nick Moskovitz, this position supports observational studies of Centaurs—transient small bodies with orbits between Neptune and Jupiter—using new and archival astronomical data. The role emphasizes independent problem-solving and collaboration with the project team.
About the Role
The research assistant will contribute to two primary objectives:
- Performing telescopic observations to measure the optical colors of Centaurs smaller than 20 km, investigating relationships between size, color, and surface properties. This includes opportunities to use the Large Monolithic Imager on the Lowell Discovery Telescope.
- Searching for cometary activity by stacking archival FITS images of serendipitously observed Centaurs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct observational studies of Centaurs using astronomical data.
- Collaborate with Dr. Moskovitz and project team members in regular meetings.
- Prioritize tasks, set schedules, troubleshoot problems, and complete complex tasks on time.
- Maintain professionalism and collegiality in alignment with Observatory standards.
Requirements
- Currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or a related field.
- Experience using computers for data analysis; familiarity with Python is strongly desired.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and solve problems without direct supervision.
Working Conditions
- Laboratory environment with computer-based tasks, including programming and data analysis.
- Occasional extended sitting and operation of manual valves/switches.
- Regular in-person and virtual meetings to report progress and discuss strategy.
- Movement across the Flagstaff campus at 7,000’ elevation, sometimes on uneven terrain.

Pay
$20.90 - $23.86/hour
Schedule
- Part-time, temporary position averaging 10 hours per week.
- Flexible scheduling within each week.
- Initial term: 1 year (2026–2027 academic year), with potential extension up to 3 years based on performance and funding.
