Cemetery Caretaker

Definition / General Purpose

To act as overseer/caretaker of the City Cemetery and to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and construction work on the cemetery grounds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent.
  • Safety classes, employee updates, description summaries, weekly reports, and cemetery records.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs a variety of cemetery caretaking duties; mowing grass utilizing lawn mowing equipment, trimming, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, planting, raising and lowing of flags, opening the cemetery daily, and other routine or special projects.
• Marks internment sites, disinterment sites, headstone placements, footstone placements, and all other relevant location services.
• Completes daily duties, overseeing work progress, inspecting work, keeping inventory of tools and equipment and training personnel on using light equipment and proper procedures.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

• Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent; One (1) to three (3) months of related experience caring for a cemetery or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Ability to operate a small backhoe, tractors, riding, and hand mowers.
• Good writing and record-keeping skills.
• Ability to communicate with the public.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Valid state driver's license or ability to obtain one.
• Able to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.
• Able to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may complain about services provided.
• Able to follow directions.
• Willing to work on call as needed and on a 24-hours basis.
• Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

• Pickup truck, gators;
• lawn/turf and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, acidifiers/aeration equipment, chain saws, edger's, backflows, weed trimmers, trailers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems;
• miscellaneous hand and power tools for lawn maintenance.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions in all City related facilities to include the Golf Course.

• Power tools, motor/landscaping equipment, construction equipment, toxic fumes, weather.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
