Definition / General Purpose
To act as overseer/caretaker of the City Cemetery and to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and construction work on the cemetery grounds.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent.
- Safety classes, employee updates, description summaries, weekly reports, and cemetery records.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs a variety of cemetery caretaking duties; mowing grass utilizing lawn mowing equipment, trimming, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, planting, raising and lowing of flags, opening the cemetery daily, and other routine or special projects.
- Marks internment sites, disinterment sites, headstone placements, footstone placements, and all other relevant location services.
- Completes daily duties, overseeing work progress, inspecting work, keeping inventory of tools and equipment and training personnel on using light equipment and proper procedures.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
- Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned.
- Other Duties as assigned.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent; One (1) to three (3) months of related experience caring for a cemetery or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Ability to operate a small backhoe, tractors, riding, and hand mowers.
- Good writing and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to communicate with the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid state driver's license or ability to obtain one.
- Able to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.
- Able to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may complain about services provided.
- Able to follow directions.
- Willing to work on call as needed and on a 24-hours basis.
- Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
- Pickup truck, gators;
- lawn/turf and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, acidifiers/aeration equipment, chain saws, edger's, backflows, weed trimmers, trailers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems;
- miscellaneous hand and power tools for lawn maintenance.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions in all City related facilities to include the Golf Course.

- Power tools, motor/landscaping equipment, construction equipment, toxic fumes, weather.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
