CEAE Undergraduate Student Teaching Lab Assistant

About the role

The CEAE Department seeks an Undergraduate Teaching Lab Assistant to support faculty instruction for the CE 571 (Environmental Engineering Laboratory) course through pre-class preparation of experiments, assistance with student laboratory work during class, and grading of student laboratory reports. This position includes both in-class and out-of-class work.

Responsibilities

• Enhance student learning by interacting with students during the class period by guiding students through laboratory work.
• Help faculty prepare for weekly experiments through preparation of materials, equipment set up and testing, and related activities.
• Grading of lab reports.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through descriptions of work experience, educational experiences, and teaching/tutoring interest in cover letter; a record of relevant accomplishments and productivity addressed in a one-page resume; and an overall GPA and letter grade obtained in the specified class.

• Must have taken the specified course or an equivalent class and earned at least a ‘B’ in the course.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated mastery of course content.

The job requires physical presence in the course (approx. 4 hours/week during class hours) and may demand approx. 4 hours/week outside of class.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching/Tutoring experience in a university/college setting.
• Completion of additional upper-level lab-based courses in chemistry, biology, or related fields.
• Earned an ‘A’ in the course.

Position Requirements

• During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours.
• For summer periods the student hourly must:
  • have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or
  • be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or
  • be enrolled in summer session or
  • be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
• Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

• Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
• This is an hourly/non-exempt position.
• A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
