About the Role

Operates refuse collection vehicles on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage. Performs pre-trip and post-trip truck check and cleaning, and other related work as assigned. Work is performed under supervision and reviewed through direct observation of routes and discussion of problems.

Responsibilities

• Service commercial businesses by picking up front load containers using levers inside the truck cab to empty containers into the truck.
• Open corral doors to access containers; roll 3-4 yard cans on castors (weighing up to 600 pounds) into position for dumping as needed.
• Pick up loose trash from the truck and/or ground and clean up spills.
• Transport waste to designated local landfill/disposal areas.
• Complete route/productivity sheets, record mileage, fuel consumption, log books (as required), Vehicle Condition Reports, and other forms.
• Communicate professionally with customers and report any issues or complaints to appropriate internal contacts.
• Provide exceptional customer service in all aspects of refuse operations.
• Exhibit a positive attitude toward company, customer, and municipal goals.
• Safely operate the truck, including pre-trip and post-trip inspections, evaluating materials for hazardous content, and ensuring safe transport.
• Clean waste from the packer blade and truck body on each landfill run to ensure smooth and safe operations.
• Maintain a clean truck and wash the exterior weekly.
• Inspect and clean the truck: lift hood, inspect under the hood, walk around and check undercarriage; pump gas, check fluid levels, and air tires using appropriate tools.
• Attend and participate in corporation-sponsored training courses as assigned.
• Stay up to date on current technology relevant to the role.
• Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• Class A or B CDL valid for the state in which the position works.
• Safe driving record.
• At least 21 years of age or older.
• Understanding of refuse collection policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices.
• Knowledge of Department of Transportation and State requirements for operators of commercial motor vehicles.
• Ability to hear and see within normal ranges, with or without correction.
• Normal range of body motion to operate heavy equipment control levers and drive refuse trucks (including right-hand driver’s position on certain equipment).
• Ability to follow designated refuse collection routes or work schedules.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain written records and service responses.
• Proficiency in speaking and reading English to communicate with customers, co-workers, dispatch, and supervisors, understand highway and traffic signals, and make legible entries on paperwork.
