Location: Knoxville, TN – Department of Safety & Homeland Security, Knox County. This is an onsite, full-time position requiring a criminal background check.
Pay
- Starting monthly salary: $3,229 ($38,748 annually).
- Newly hired CDL Examiners earn $3,401 per month.
- After successful completion of a one-year probationary period, salary increases to $3,775 per month.
- An additional 10% assignment differential is included for positions in Davidson, Hamilton, Knox, or Shelby counties.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
- Complete a background clearance application, including a fingerprint-based and name-based criminal history records check.
- No conviction or finding of not guilty by reason of insanity for any Permanent disqualifying criminal offense listed in 49 CFR § 1572.103(a).
- No conviction or finding of not guilty by reason of insanity for any Interim disqualifying criminal offense listed in 49 CFR § 1572.103(b) within the 7 years preceding the application date.
- No release from incarceration within the 5 years preceding the application date for any Interim disqualifying criminal offense listed in 49 CFR § 1572.103(b).
- Not under want or warrant for a felony listed in 49 CFR § 1572.103(a) or (b).
- Pass a pre-employment physical examination following an offer of employment.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license or be able to obtain one prior to appointment.
Driver Record Requirements:
- For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not include: DUI, reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than 4 moving violations.
About the Role
An employee in this class performs commercial driver's license examination work, including administering tests to driver's license applicants, determining appropriate license categories, ensuring applicant qualifications, processing fees, and issuing licenses. This role operates under the general supervision of a Branch Manager.
Responsibilities
- Train employees at the associate level on all tasks and responsibilities of a Commercial Driver's License Examiner.
- Answer questions and provide clarification related to the position.
- Obtain necessary information from customers applying for commercial driver's licenses, driver's licenses, permits, or other relevant documents.
- Enter information into the computer system to meet customer needs efficiently.
- Administer knowledge and road skills tests for commercial and noncommercial driver's license applicants, including:
- Completing forms and test-taking procedures.
- Conducting vision screenings, written tests, and road skills tests in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
- Photographing applicants with a digital camera.
- Advise applicants of test results, explain retesting procedures if needed, and record results in the computer database.
- Explain state laws, licensing requirements, and Department of Safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations to the public.
- Answer questions regarding office hours, location, fees, and the application process.
- Count and record cash-on-hand at the beginning and end of shifts, print daily receipt reports, and reconcile discrepancies.
- Calculate and reconcile daily office revenue by comparing daily reports to INFOPAC reports.
- Inspect motor vehicle functioning (e.g., lights, brakes, turn signals) to ensure safe operation.
- Observe applicants' driving abilities to determine adherence to road safety rules and regulations.
- Update operational records and licensing information in the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST).
- Verify applicants' personal information in the database against written applications for accuracy.
- Maintain at least 10 hours of commercial driver's license knowledge and road testing annually to comply with federal and state laws.
