About the role
This position involves operating a residential/recycling collection truck, side-load and/or rear-load truck, ancillary equipment, and hydraulic systems to collect solid waste and/or recyclables on specified routes. Responsibilities include loading waste into vehicles, maintaining route quality standards, and communicating vehicle issues to mechanics and supervisors.
Responsibilities
- Operate truck and equipment to collect solid waste and recyclables on specified routes.
- Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the rear or side of waste collection vehicles.
- Compact trash into vehicles using equipment operated on the truck.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports, daily truck reports, and route sheets.
- Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to mechanics and supervisors immediately.
- Maintain route quality standards as determined by management.
- Follow all safety standards and equipment checks and precautions in performing duties.
- Report all accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state/provincial, local, and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
- Maintain a clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items and remove them from waste carts or cans.
- Manage assigned helpers if applicable.
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and directives from supervisors.
- Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
- Exhibit a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of services performed.
- Recommend purchases of additional containers, carts, and spare parts to supervisors.
- Work with supervisors to improve routing efficiencies.
- Attend safety and branch meetings.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
- One (1) year of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate.
- Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
- Ability to demonstrate the ability to safely operate the truck and equipment.
- Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
- Ability to control operations of equipment, maneuver the truck into and out of minimum clearance spaces, and use mirrors to back distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
- Ability to recognize unacceptable waste, such as gasoline or other flammable materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Flexibility to accept and adapt to change and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
- Ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example: two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting or standing.
- Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands
- Frequently stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
- Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.
- Frequent exposure to loud noise, humidity, rain, stormy weather, extreme hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Outdoor work environment up to 100% of the time.
- Works route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day.
- Occasionally works in high precarious places.
- Works in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly.
- Works in usually loud conditions.

Pay
$25+/hour, depending on experience.
Schedule
Work in an outdoor environment up to 100% of the time. Works route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day. Works in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly. Works in usually loud conditions.
