Founded in 1989, Desert Lumber and Building Materials supplies customers with specialty building materials from multiple locations across Las Vegas, NV. Operations include 2 lumber yards, floor and roof truss manufacturing, Desert Fasteners, and Desert Window Systems.

About the role

The CDL Driver I delivers materials to job sites, inspects and maintains the truck, reports shortages and claims to the supervisor, and assists in loading and storing materials. Typically drives a truck with a capacity of more than three tons, though may be a less experienced CDL or tractor-trailer driver.

Responsibilities

  • Operate safely and participate in a positive work environment
  • Maintain a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License as required
  • Prepare DOT-required log of time on duty and driving
  • Organize and secure load; assist forklift operators when loading
  • Check orders for accuracy
  • Deliver and unload materials to customers’ satisfaction
  • Complete daily equipment pre-inspection
  • Record all merchandise returned by truck and assist in unloading material returned for credit
  • Follow guidelines established by the Department of Transportation
  • Provide excellent customer service and relay messages sent by customers while on the job
  • Assist supervisor, other employees, and other work areas as assigned
  • Maintain good housekeeping in yard and warehouse
  • Comply with all company policies and guidelines
  • Operate truck-mounted forklift safely and efficiently
  • Maintain cleanliness of truck
  • Participate in and complete assigned trainings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Adhere to the company’s commitment to workplace safety

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • CDL experience preferred
  • Basic CDL experience with flatbeds and/or tractor trailers required
  • 1-3 years CDL experience required for interstate commerce
  • Class A or B CDL License required

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to do basic math, read orders, write instructions, and complete forms
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with customers, other employees, and supervisors using verbal and written skills
  • Deal constructively with conflict and recognize potential problems
  • Maintain current operator’s license and meet company driver qualification requirements
  • Knowledge and ability to use safe lifting techniques
  • Proficiency with or ability to learn current technologies (e.g., smartphone, GPS, and other necessary business applications)
