CDL Driver

This position is located in Chantilly, VA and is open to both internal and external applicants. In-person attendance is required.

About the Role

The CDL Driver supports warehouse and delivery operations by transporting materials to customer sites or branch locations. This role maintains vehicle cleanliness, logs, and inspection reports, and provides exceptional customer service. Positions include general CDL Drivers, Pole Drivers (handling oversize loads and large poles), and CDL Trainees (who will complete training to acquire a CDL license).

Responsibilities

• Deliver materials to customer sites or branch locations.
• Maintain delivery vehicles in clean, working condition, including monitoring maintenance and mileage data.
• Complete daily driver logs, vehicle inspection reports (DVIR), truck summaries, and other required documentation.
• Adhere to all local, state, and federal DOT regulations and company driver policies.
• Understand truck routes and coordinate deliveries with company trucks.
• Load and unload materials at branch and customer locations.
• Support warehouse operations as needed.

Pole Drivers

• Operate over-length vehicles in tight spaces, highway traffic, and off-road conditions.
• Work on job sites and pole yards, handling large poles with specialized equipment.
• Rig oversize loads for safe transport on public highways.
• Navigate construction sites, right-of-ways (ROW), rail yards, and uneven terrain.
• Unload poles from rail cars.

CDL Trainees

• Complete on-site or local training center courses to acquire a CDL license.
• Learn pre/post-trip vehicle inspections and cargo securement techniques.
• Train on vehicle technology, including Drive Cam, Encompass, and handheld capture/POD devices.
• Understand required vehicle equipment (e.g., cab card, insurance, IFTA permits, accident kit, fire extinguisher, spill kit, safety triangles).
• Complete orientation on various vehicle types (box truck, curtain side, Moffett, lift gate) and special equipment (Moffett, pole crane trucks).
• Drive with a Border States CDL Driver Mentor during training.

Non-Essential Functions

• Conduct Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) as part of daily routes.
• Perform warehouse tasks such as order filling, stocking, processing returns, receiving, and shipping.
• Check and pack materials for delivery.
• Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 21 years.
• Clean driving record.
• Valid Class A or B CDL driver’s license for the state of residence, with current medical certification (Trainees must obtain a CDL after training).
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Working knowledge of PC for Windows, internet, email, and SAP software is a plus.

Pole Drivers

• Familiarity with state regulations for oversize load permits, flagging, and chase vehicles.
