CDC Fellowship in Cancer Epidemiology and Applied Research

About the role

The Epidemiology and Applied Research Branch (EARB) within the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a research opportunity focusing on epidemiologic research addressing topics in cancer prevention and control.

Responsibilities

• Analyze data from national surveys, electronic health records, cancer registries, and administrative claims databases to investigate cancer risk factors, screening practices, follow-up services, survivorship, differences in health outcomes, and the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based cancer prevention and control interventions.
• Gain experience in conducting applied epidemiologic research, systematic literature reviews, statistical programming and analysis using software such as SAS, SUDAAN, and R, data interpretation and visualization, scientific writing, and scientific communication.
• Develop skills in translating research into public health practice through collaboration and dissemination of findings via scientific publications, presentations, and other communication products.
• Participate in CDC seminars, workshops, scientific conferences, and other internal and external professional development activities to enhance research skills, broaden scientific knowledge, and support development.

Requirements

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the following relevant fields: Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Services Research, Population Health, Health Informatics, or another closely related quantitative health science discipline. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in a relevant field within the last 5 years.
• Training and hands-on experience in epidemiologic and quantitative data analysis.
• Experience with statistical software such as SAS, R, Stata, or Python.
• Experience analyzing observational, survey, electronic health record, or administrative claims datasets.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Interest in applied cancer epidemiology and cancer prevention and control.

Benefits

Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Pay

Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience.

Schedule

The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
