About the role
This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems. Work involves operating and maintaining pumps, valves, hydrants, meters, mains, and related equipment; installing and repairing water and sewer lines; and performing general maintenance tasks. The position may also assist in the maintenance of streets, parks, and other Town facilities.
Responsibilities
- Operates, maintains, and repairs water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems, including pumps, valves, hydrants, meters, mains, and related equipment.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines, mains, services, and appurtenances.
- Performs leak detection and repairs on water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of streets, parks, and other Town facilities as needed.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles used in utility maintenance and construction.
- Performs routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles; reports major mechanical problems.
- Responds to emergency calls for water main breaks, sewer backups, and other utility-related issues.
- Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and barricades for work zones.
- Performs meter reading, installation, and change-outs as required.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
- Follows all safety procedures and regulations; uses personal protective equipment as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in utility maintenance, construction, or a related field (for Utility Worker I).
- Two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance, construction, or a related field (for Utility Worker II).
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain a Class D Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection certification within one (1) year of employment (for Utility Worker II).
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water, wastewater, and reclaimed water systems.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, and blueprints.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles safely and efficiently.
- Ability to work in a team environment and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces.
- Ability to respond to emergency calls and work outside of normal business hours as required.
