Cathedral Choir Director
Position Summary
The Cathedral Choir Director provides assistance to the Director of Worship in the musical celebration of Archdiocesan and principal cathedral parish liturgies. The Choir Director primarily provides this support through conducting, rehearsal management, and administration of the ensemble.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
Conduct Choir at the principal Sunday Cathedral Mass and warm-up. This includes some non-Sunday Holy Days.
Conduct Choir at Archdiocesan Liturgies (e.g. Chrism Mass, Rite of Election, Ordinations).
Plan and conduct choir rehearsals on Wednesday evenings with Director of Worship support on keyboard.
Assist the Director of Worship in the planning of choral repertoire for the choir season, selecting Anthems and Motets. Choir season normally runs from the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary time through Corpus Christi, with additional Archdiocesan Liturgies.
Collaborate with Director of Worship in ongoing recruitment and development of choir section leaders and volunteers.
Support the Office of Worship staff with choir communication (e.g. attendance tracking, schedule updates).
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the canon of sacred choral music from Gregorian chant to contemporary.
Working knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgical documents and sacramental rituals.
Excellent choral conducting and rehearsal techniques.
Impeccable collaboration and human relations skills.
Excellent organizational skills and personal initiative, detail-oriented with an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficient in: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, Music engraving software (e.g. Dorico, Gregorio).
Education And Experience
Background in and/or knowledge of the Catholic Church with a demonstrated commitment to the mission and the teachings of the Church.
Bachelor’s degree in music or music education required. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience preferred.
Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups.
