About the role
The role involves managing and enhancing the semantic cataloging within the SBN (Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale) Index. The SBN Index currently contains a substantial archive of subjects and classification symbols created by various library hubs (Poli) using tools such as the 1956 Italian Libraries Subject Headings and the Dewey Decimal Classification across its editions.
The database includes over 1.3 million subjects, covering more than 2.114 million subject-indexed records, and 2.133 million title/subject links. It also features over 236,000 classification symbols from various editions, accounting for 1.485 million classified records and 1.647 million title/class links.
Responsibilities
- Utilize the new SBNMARC protocol for semantic cataloging, enabling the management of subjects and classification symbols as independent entities.
- Implement and manage direct querying of semantic data (subjects, terms, classification symbols) within the SBN Index.
- Facilitate the capture of subjects and classes independently of title capture.
- Enable navigation from subject/class archives to linked titles, with the option to capture these titles.
- Support direct querying of the descriptor archive and navigation between descriptors and linked subjects.
- Perform creation, correction, deletion, and merging of subject strings, including transferring title links between subjects (via direct interface client).
- Manage batch import/export functions for subject authority files or classification lists (via direct interface client).
- Apply the new subject heading tool (Nuovo Soggettario) in SBN, allowing semantic cataloging of documents regardless of the document’s authority level.
- Handle subject strings created with the Nuovo Soggettario and manage related subject and descriptor archives with new keys for proper treatment.
- Collaborate with the working group on the application of the Nuovo Soggettario in SBN to analyze the impact of Index modifications on Polo software and define new intervention guidelines.
Qualifications
- Experience with semantic cataloging in library systems, particularly within the SBN Index.
- Familiarity with the SBNMARC protocol and its application in managing semantic data.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification and Italian subject heading tools, including the Nuovo Soggettario.
- Understanding of UNI-ISO 2788 standards for thesaurus management and term relationships.
- Technical proficiency in using cataloging interfaces and batch import/export functions for authority files.
- Ability to analyze and address the impact of system modifications on library software (Polo applications).
