Position Details

MSU’s Culinary Services hires motivated team members who are excited to actively participate in the ever changing world of the high-paced food industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Cashier actively works to provide a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for students and other customers during their dining experience.
  • This position will be trained to work primarily as a cashier and to monitor the service area floor.
  • Positively and professionally interacts with customers.
  • Operates the cashier station to properly receive monies, use a point of sale register, and daily reconciliation of the cash and credit cards.
  • Fulfills cash handling policies and procedures, counts cash drawer, and processes credit card settlements.
  • Cleans work and service areas, and related equipment in accordance with the sanitarian’s recommendations (beverage stations, trash, wiping tables/chairs, etc).
  • Affords assistance with monitoring beverage service inventory and keeping records as requested.
  • Affords assistance with laundry service.
  • Performs trash and compost removal duties.
  • Might afford assistance with training student and temporary employees.
  • Actively contributes to the team by performing other duties as needed in support of the department’s mission.
  • Occasionally might be asked to work in the the following areas:
    • Serve food.
    • Ensure quality product is being served and properly handle food in accordance with FDA food codes.
    • Assist with regular cleaning, disposition and storage of foods (hot and cold), supplies, equipment.
    • Work in the dishroom or pots/pans.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic experience in a customer service or food industry position or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Cashiering experience.

  • Represent the department and the University to others in a professional and courteous manner.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • All full-time positions are eligible for full benefits 12 months of the year.10 and 12 month positions.
  • Shifts vary across departments, 7 days per week from 5:30am-9:30pm.
  • Might be asked to work days/evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands.
  • Occasional work outside and in inclement weather assisting with special events.
  • Possess a 4-hour sanitation certification or have the ability to become certified.
  • Must have the ability to understand and communicate in English with adequate proficiency to follow directions from supervisor, read and understand safety guidelines and directions to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring, and communicate effectively with customers (staff, visitors, students) by listening and speaking clearly to them.

Physical Demands

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Normal cashier, dish room, service areas, kitchen, cooler, freezer, dock environments.
  • Stationary and/or moving about for long periods of time.
  • Frequently moving and placing containers/product weighing up to 30 lbs and occasionally up to 100lbs.
  • Occasionally moving product up and down stairs.
  • Bending, kneeling, stretching and general moving about while stocking products.
  • Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils and other equipment.
  • Performing repetitive motions related to job duties.
  • Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals.
