Cashier/Barista
Full-time, non-exempt, hourly union position with a starting rate of $17.31/hr. Note that stated hours and days may vary; mandatory overtime as required by the union contract.
About the Role
Providing quality meals to students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a timely manner with an emphasis on customer service. Responsibilities include handling student meal cards, cash, and credit cards while following proper money and merchandising policies and procedures. The role involves food prep, customer service, and working in high-volume dining operations.
Responsibilities
- Accurate cash handling and food preparation.
- Provide excellent customer service by serving customers in a friendly and courteous manner.
- Station set up, breakdown, restocking, and occasionally putting orders away.
- Keep a neat, clean, and sanitized work area.
- Work consistently and productively during the entire shift.
- General cleaning, other food service duties, and projects as requested by management.
Requirements
- Minimum one-year verifiable cashier and money handling experience.
- Previous experience with computer-based point of sale cash register system.
- Previous experience with food preparation preferred.
- Experience making specialty coffee drinks using espresso machines may be required.
- Ability to prioritize work and execute tasks with speed, efficiency, and accuracy in a high-volume environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to fulfill customer orders.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to speak, read, and write English, and accurate math skills.
- Maintain professional appearance, demeanor, and hygiene.
- Reliable transportation and attendance.
- Must pass PCI testing to be PCI compliant.
Work Environment
The work environment can be loud and busy. There is exposure to kitchen hazards such as hot surfaces and liquids, sharp knives, and slippery surfaces. The position operates in a kitchen environment with frequent exposure to heat, steam, fire, noise, and extreme temperatures in coolers and freezers.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Very active role requiring the ability to stand and walk for a minimum of 8 hours.
- Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, stretch, twist, or reach out.
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Must use hands to finger, manipulate, reach with hands and arms, stir, measure, pour, cut, chop, dice, and decorate.
- Requires working taste buds, ability to smell, feel with fingers, and visually inspect, including close and distance vision.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 30 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Pay
Starting rate of $17.31 per hour (union employees: see Appendix “A” of the union contract).
