Overview
Consistently provides friendly and cooperative service to internal and external customers at our retail locations, which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with limited exceptions. You will process customer orders efficiently, accurately, safely, and courteously at a two-aisle check stand, multi-station self-checkout (SCO) lane, or customer service desk as assigned. Generally works 6-8 hour shifts between 5:00 am and 1:00 am.
Responsibilities
- Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers.
- Maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer.
- Operates check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner, and scale to process customer orders using two aisles to check customers.
- Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
- Processes monetary transactions (e.g., giving and receiving change, cash, checks, gift certificates, traveler’s checks, food stamps) and processes coupons and refunds while adhering to all Cash Handling and Lane Accountability policies and procedures.
- Maintains knowledge of current product location, monitors UPC codes, and ensures proper pricing.
- Maintains a clean, neat, and properly stocked check stand and ensures a safe and secure work area.
- Stocks, prices, and rotates merchandise.
- May be assigned to a multi-station self-checkout lane or customer service counter as needed.
- Follows all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items (e.g., tobacco, alcohol).
- Adheres to all USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures.
Additional Self-Checkout Attendant Duties
- Regularly moves within the SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain an attentive presence, and keep the area clear of safety hazards.
- Initiates and engages contact with customers as they process transactions.
- Responds to SCO stations to accurately review, address, and clear alerts and/or errors with customer transactions.
- Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payment in a fast-paced setting.
- Actively assists customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage.
- Maintains a high level of awareness of the self-checkout area and customers; anticipates customer needs, monitors transaction activity, makes regular eye contact, and observes the bottom of the basket.
- Prioritizes safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns as provided by Company policy.
Requirements
Ability to:
- Work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform friendly, courteous, and tactful relations with customers and co-workers with composure.
- Communicate (hearing and speech) to perform customer relation tasks.
- Complete written forms and conduct visual inspections, read information on merchandise, etc.
- Lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 20 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently for extended periods.
- Be at least 16 years of age or older.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
- Learn and memorize considerable information, including PLU codes, product locations, check stand procedures, keyboard procedures, and company policies.
- Ensure accuracy in scanning, verifying sales, and handling monetary transactions with mental alertness and basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
- Occasionally use blades for box cutting.
- Use household cleaners to maintain the work area (e.g., approved all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner).
- Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
- Navigate and manage potentially high-stress situations, volatile or unsatisfied customers, and high volumes of transactions.
Additional Requirements
- As required by applicable state and local laws: food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification (e.g., TAM card).
- For minors hired, hours may differ, as well as machines and equipment operated.
