Part-time afternoon shift

About the Role

The duties and responsibilities of this position must be carried out in a manner consistent with the goals, values, and operating principles of Sedano’s Supermarkets, and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Every employee is expected to follow departmental and company policies to ensure smooth operations. All employees, regardless of job title, are responsible for maintaining a safe environment throughout the store, including addressing hazardous situations promptly and reporting them to the store manager. Employees must maintain a friendly attitude, adhere to the dress code or uniform policy, keep the store stocked and organized, and provide excellent customer service regularly.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties

• Politely greet customers with a smile and provide excellent customer service; attend to customers’ needs and call for a manager or supervisor when necessary.
• Promptly scan products or weigh produce; operate the cash register accurately and efficiently, accept all forms of payment, and provide correct change.
• Maintain the cash drawer with sufficient currency and coins; count the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift.
• Conduct price checks when necessary.
• Place items in bags for customers and assist with loading them into shopping carts when needed.
• Return discarded items to shelves when necessary.
• Keep the conveyor belt, scanner, scale, and counter clean at all times.
• Assist in keeping the front of the store clean, organized, and free from safety hazards.
• When requested or scheduled, straighten displays and shelves of merchandise (also known as “facing”).
• Attend and/or participate in store or department meetings.
• Maintain punctuality and good attendance in compliance with company policies; ensure work responsibilities are covered during foreseeable absences.
• Perform other work-related duties as required to accomplish the objectives of the position.

Secondary Duties

• Serve as a bagger or facing clerk when necessary.
• Add or change paper in registers, printers, adding machines, or other office equipment.
• Report any equipment malfunctions to the manager on duty.
• Gather shopping carts from the front of the store and parking lot when needed.
• Assist the manager on duty in other departments when needed.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write, and speak English and Spanish (preferred).
• Ability to understand and follow instructions in both English and Spanish (preferred).
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small group situations with managers, customers, and the public.
• Good mathematical skills.
• Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Proficiency in using computers, cash registers, lottery machines, money order machines, and 10-key adding machines; ability to change or add receipt paper when needed.
• Takes responsibility for own actions.
• Ability to work scheduled hours and days, including holidays and weekends.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

• Stand in one place for extended periods of time.
• Walk, use fingers and hands to type, handle, or feel.
• Reach with hands and arms and perform repetitive motions with arms and hands.
• Talk and hear, and use the sense of smell.
• See, including close vision and peripheral vision.

The employee is frequently required to:

• Carry, lift, and/or move up to 20 pounds (e.g., a bag of rice).
• Push and pull carts of merchandise.
• Stoop or bend at the waist, and twist the back and neck.

The employee is occasionally required to:

• Sit, climb a step stool, balance, crouch, or bend at the knees.

This role is performed in a grocery store environment with frequent contact with supervisors, employees, and customers. The noise level is low to moderate. The position may involve the use of scales, shopping carts, and cleaning supplies or equipment.
