About the Role

Increases customer confidence and loyalty by providing accurate, fast, and courteous customer checkout. This individual effectively scans, packages, and receives payment for customer purchases while expediting the flow of groceries through the checkout lane. Maintains financial responsibility in their service lane.

Responsibilities

  • Creates an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important, and appreciated to increase customer confidence and loyalty (30% of time).
  • Listens to and appropriately escalates customer concerns to management with a positive attitude.
  • Stocks front-end products; restocks and uses supply items efficiently to eliminate waste and maintain low supply costs.
  • Manages lane according to service standards and assists in training new cashiers.
  • Uses the Point of Sale (POS) system and handles various tenders such as cash, checks, credit, debit, SNAP EBT, offline SNAP EBT, WIC, rain checks, reward offers, and coupons according to company policy (30% of time).
  • Adheres to company limits on cash shortages and/or overages and works honestly to control loss, following guidelines on restricted sale items (e.g., alcohol, tobacco).
  • Assists customers in unloading purchases onto the conveyor belt, packs groceries to prevent damage, and loads groceries into the customer’s vehicle (20% of time).
  • Checks the price of merchandise in all departments as needed.
  • Collects shopping carts from the parking lot and returns them to designated areas (10% of time).
  • Ensures company standards for safety, food handling, sanitation, and productivity are maintained.
  • Adheres to regulatory compliance requirements for food safety, USDA, Country of Origin Labeling (COOL), and Department of Agriculture (DOA).
  • Executes product recalls and withdrawals promptly, securing items and removing them from customer access.
  • Reinforces safety programs by complying with safety procedures, inspecting for unsafe conditions, and reporting them to management.
  • Notifies management of customer or employee accidents, safety risks, or illegal activity (e.g., robbery, theft, or fraud).
  • Ensures adherence to wage and hour policies and cultivates a culture of safety within the store.
  • Ensures all associates have received necessary safety training and that Hazardous Assessments are posted for reference.
  • Ensures Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and utilized by associates executing tasks within the department.
  • Ensures equipment is in good repair and assists with remediation of safety hazards (e.g., lock out/tag out of equipment).
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (preferred).
  • 0–3 years of relevant experience.
  • Customer service skills and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Basic computer skills for online training.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • High standard of integrity and reliability.
  • Authorization to work in the United States or the ability to obtain the same.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and background check.

Skills

  • Proficiency in English (Spanish preferred).
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
  • Frequent reaching, carrying, pushing, or lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing (up to 10 ft), and balancing.
  • Manual dexterity for handling equipment such as registers, scanners, and pricing guns.

Environmental Factors

  • Retail environment with exposure to indoor, outdoor, cold, freezing, heated, and wet/humid conditions.
  • Frequent twisting of the back and/or neck, walking on slippery or cluttered floors, and working with hazardous equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to loud noise, skin irritants, nuisance dust, fumes, sprays, hazardous cleaning solutions, and other toxins.
  • Use of cleaning supplies, office equipment, registers, scanners, scales, material handling equipment (e.g., racks, carts, pallet jacks), and shopping carts.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required: goggles, gloves, back brace.
  • Pulling requirement: up to 250 lbs.
  • Lifting requirement: up to 30 lbs.
