About the Role
Increases customer confidence and loyalty by providing accurate, fast and courteous customer checkout. This individual effectively scans, packages, and receives payment for customer purchases while expediting the flow of groceries through the checkout lane and maintaining financial responsibility in their service lane.
Responsibilities
- Creates an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important, and appreciated to increase customer confidence and loyalty.
- Listens to and appropriately escalates customer concerns to management with a positive attitude.
- Stocks front-end products; restocks and uses supply items efficiently to eliminate waste and maintain the lowest supply cost.
- Manages lane according to service standards and assists in training new cashiers.
- Uses the Point of Sale (POS) system and handles various tenders such as cash, checks, credit, debit, SNAP EBT, offline SNAP EBT, WIC, rain checks, reward offers, and coupons according to company policy.
- Understands and adheres to company limits on cash shortages and/or overages, works honestly to control loss, and follows guidelines on restricted sale items (e.g., alcohol, tobacco).
- Assists customers in unloading purchases onto the conveyor belt, packs purchases to prevent damage, and loads groceries into the customer’s vehicle.
- Checks the price of merchandise in all departments as needed.
- Collects shopping carts from the parking lot and returns them to designated areas.
- Ensures company standards for safety, proper food handling, sanitation, and productivity are maintained.
- Adheres to all regulatory compliance requirements, including food safety, USDA, Country of Origin Labeling (COOL), and Department of Agriculture (DOA).
- Executes product recalls and withdrawals in a timely manner, ensuring items are secured and removed from customer access.
- Reinforces safety programs by complying with safety procedures, inspecting and identifying unsafe conditions, and reporting them to store management.
- Notifies management of customer or employee accidents, reports safety risks, illegal activity (e.g., robbery, theft, or fraud), and ensures adherence to wage and hour policies.
- Cultivates a culture of safety, ensures all associates have received necessary safety training, and posts Hazardous Assessments for reference.
- Ensures equipment is in good repair and assists with remediation of safety hazards (e.g., lock out/tag out of equipment).
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED (preferred).
- 0–3 years of relevant experience.
- Customer service skills and effective communication skills.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
- Basic computer skills for online training.
- Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- High standard of integrity and reliability.
- Authorization to work in the United States or the ability to obtain the same.
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and background check.
Skills
- Proficiency in using POS systems and handling various payment methods (cash, checks, credit/debit cards, SNAP EBT, WIC, etc.).
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and regulatory compliance (USDA, COOL, DOA).
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and pull up to 250 lbs.
- Manual dexterity and ability to perform repetitive movements with hands and feet.
- Ability to stand, walk, reach, carry, push, lift, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb up to 10 ft.
- Familiarity with cleaning supplies, office equipment, pricing guns, scales, scanners, and material handling equipment (racks, carts, pallet jacks).
Environmental Factors
This role operates in a retail environment with varied shifts. The employee may be exposed to indoor, outdoor, cold, freezing, heated, and wet/humid conditions. Safety risks include twisting back/neck, slippery or cluttered floors, hazardous equipment, sharp objects, loud noise, skin irritants, nuisance dust, fumes, sprays, and hazardous cleaning solutions.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, utilize manual dexterity, talk, see, hear, smell, and perform repetitive movements.
- Frequently required to reach at waist level or overhead, carry, push, or lift up to 30 lbs.
- Occasionally required to sit, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb up to 10 ft.
- Frequently required to twist back and/or neck, walk on slippery or cluttered surfaces, and work with hazardous equipment.
- Occasionally exposed to loud noise, skin irritants, nuisance dust, fumes, sprays, and hazardous cleaning solutions.
