About the role

The Case Worker in the Mang Unit assists patients at Cook County Health (CCH) by providing comprehensive interviews and screenings to identify qualified programs and assess patients' ability to pay for medical services. The Caseworker assists patients with various application and authorization processes through the gathering and analysis of pertinent financial, demographic, and other data to acquire medical assistance under Medicaid, Medicare, Commercial Insurance, approved payment arrangements, or Financial Assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews patients and/or their representatives to obtain demographic and financial information to complete quality applications.
  • Provides document forms and explains Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) policies and procedures.
  • Verifies patient demographics during the screening process for the purpose of updating hospital data.
  • Maintains patient logs required for daily statistical productivity reports.
  • Completes and routes patient case folders with pertinent information for billing and collection purposes.
  • Completes and returns all assigned cases consistent with established productivity standards.
  • Updates hospital information system with appropriate documents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with four (4) years of work experience in hospital finance/revenue cycle operations, or a Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, finance, social work, or a behavioral science from an accredited college or university with two (2) years of experience in hospital finance/revenue cycle operations. (Official transcripts and/or high school diploma must be presented at the time of interview.)
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is required. (Bilingual testing will be administered; a passing score of 3 – High Intermediate is required.)

Skills

  • Knowledge of the managed care environment, third-party reimbursement, hospital and community services, and hospital and healthcare policies.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid eligibility requirements and Cook County Health and the Department of Human Services policies and procedures.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain records and information according to CCH policies and procedures.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to work with a multi-culturally and economically diverse patient population.
  • Ability to organize tasks and establish priorities in response to changing conditions and emergencies, with sensitivity to the needs of a multi-cultural community.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and clients in a stressful environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills necessary to explain CCH application processes to patients and their families.
  • Strong interviewing skills.
  • Attention to detail, especially as it relates to obtaining pertinent financial, demographic, and other data necessary to complete medical assistance applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidential patient records.
  • Computer skills necessary to complete the patient application process.
  • Ability to use judgment in routine and non-routine situations.

Various shifts available:

  • 07:00 AM – 03:00 PM
  • 08:00 AM – 04:00 PM
  • 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM
  • 01:00 PM – 09:00 PM
  • 02:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position functions within a healthcare environment. The incumbent must adhere to all hospital and department-specific safety requirements, including:

  • Compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Hand washing and sanitizing practices.
  • Department-specific engineering and work practice controls.
  • Any other work area safety precautions specified by hospital-wide policy and departmental procedures.

Veteran Preference

Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States for not less than 6 months of continuous service. To qualify for veteran preference, applicants must:

  • Identify as a Veteran on the employment application.
  • Attach a copy of their DD 214, DD 215, or NGB 22 (Notice of Separation) at the time of application. (If multiple documents exist, submit the one with the latest date.)
  • Coast Guard Veterans must submit a certified copy of military separation from either the Department of Transportation (before 9/11) or the Department of Homeland Security (after 9/11).
  • Discharge papers must list an Honorable Discharge status; other discharge statuses are not acceptable.
  • Alternatively, a copy of a valid State ID Card or Driver’s License identifying the holder as a Veteran may be attached to the application.
  • Original applicable discharge papers or state ID must be provided at the time of the interview.

Veterans must meet the required qualifications at the time of application.

Additional Notes

  • Degrees awarded outside the United States (except those from U.S. territories and Canada) must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at the time of the interview.
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory professional and employment references, healthcare and criminal background checks, appropriate licensure/certifications, and the successful completion of a physical and pre-employment drug screen.
