About the role

This is an Installation Career Field position performing carpentry work related to construction and maintenance of wooden range equipment, training areas, and bivouac areas.

Responsibilities

  • Perform carpentry work such as construction and maintenance of all wooden range-related equipment.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools typical of the carpentry trade.
  • Plan and lay out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and knowledge of construction or repair.
  • Inspect and perform minor repairs of range areas, training areas, and bivouac areas.
  • Inspect and perform organizational-level maintenance on gas-powered equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Pre-employment and annual physical examinations are required.
  • This position is designated as inclement weather essential; you must report for duty or remain at work in inclement weather conditions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Carpentry Worker without more than normal supervision. Perform common Carpentry Worker duties such as utilizing carpentry tools to perform carpentry repairs to buildings, structures, and equipment.

  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

  • Work involves considerable bending, stretching, and working in cramped spaces.
  • Required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier with assistance.
  • Work is performed both in an inside shop and outside on the ranges, exposed to prevailing weather conditions (hot & humid, cold & damp).
  • Subject to injury from working with hand and power tools; possibility of electrical shock when working with electrical systems.

Additional Information

  • This position may be filled as a Term Appointment not to exceed (NTE) 6 years, with possible extensions up to 8 years (or beyond with DoD approval).
  • Current permanent Federal employees applying for a Term appointment will have no statutory return rights to a permanent position.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • This position requires a 1-year trial period.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from the Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
  • Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement.
  • Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
  • Permanent Change of Station (PCS) allowances may be authorized, subject to provisions of the Joint Travel Regulations and agency determination.
  • Recruitment and relocation incentives may be authorized with a signed service agreement.
  • Student loan repayment may be authorized with a signed service agreement.
  • Salary negotiations may be authorized for candidates new to Federal service.
  • Credit for prior non-Federal work experience and certain military service for determining annual leave accrual rate may be authorized.
