Duties And Responsibilities
- Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to the type of material required.
- Prepare layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers.
- Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes.
- Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
- Erects framework for structures and lays sub-flooring.
- Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinetwork.
- Applies shock absorbing, sound deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks.
- Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
- Fits and nails sheathing on outer walls and roofs of buildings.
- Installs door and window bucks in designated positions in building framework, and braces them with boards, nailed to framework.
Skills And Abilities
- Must be able to coordinate the movements of eyes, hands, and fingers.
- Must be able to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffolding.
- Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at heights as required.
- Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
- Must be able to use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects.
- Must be able to follow specific directions.
- Must be able to stand or walk for long periods.
- Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, percentages, and fractions.
- Must be able to read and understand measuring tools and levels.
- Must be able to compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
Education And Experience
- Completion of an apprenticeship program or an equivalent 4 – 6 years of carpentry experience is required.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
