CARPENTER

About the role

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. This role is designated among essential personnel under the City's Emergency Management Policy.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and performs general carpentry activities such as the design, construction, installation, repair, and renovation of furnishings, cabinetry, doors, windows, containers, crates, flooring, building additions, panels, and glass.
• Reviews and implements work orders.
• Assists in facility maintenance such as plumbing and electrical repairs.
• Assists in greenspace maintenance such as mowing, trimming, and blowing.
• Inspects work sites to determine materials, equipment, and estimated costs for projects.
• Measures and calculates projects to ensure accuracy of design.
• Maintains a clean and safe work environment.

Physical demands

• Considerable physical exertion, including regular climbing of ladders and lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis.
• Assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
• Closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance or rapid, patterned responses within somewhat fine tolerance.
• Routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness, and unpleasant air conditions.
• Routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

Requirements

• Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines, or techniques in carpentry, typically acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond high school.
• Two years of experience in carpentry.
• Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.
• Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

Preferences

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position.

This position is subject to random drug testing and, if promotional, requires passing an assignment drug test.
