About the role

The Carpenter 2 performs complex carpentry tasks in concrete carpentry, reinforcement, or finish carpentry across new construction, renovations, and other project types. Carpenters use a variety of tools and specialized equipment. Responsibilities vary by project type and build phase but include concrete carpentry, reinforcement, and finish carpentry. All activities support JE Dunn’s strategy, vision, and values.

Autonomy and Decision-Making: Follows directions and refers exceptions to supervisor.

Career Path: Advancement to Carpenter 3.

Responsibilities

Core Carpenter Family Responsibilities

  • Working knowledge of all concrete tools and carpentry hand tools.
  • Basic understanding and use of principles of layout and construction math as needed.
  • Sets forms for concrete, including foundations, slabs-on-grade (SOG), and bulkheads.
  • Placement of concrete using buckets, chutes, pumps, and proper placement procedures (e.g., agitation).
  • Basic finishing of concrete with floats and trowels (columns, walls, foundations).
  • Cleans and maintains concrete and forming tools.
  • Proficient with basic elements of framing or forming.
  • Installs in-wall and roof blocking, general carpentry, safety railings, and floor openings.
  • Erects temporary partitions and doors.
  • Assists in installing doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Responsible for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) compliance and following OSHA standards.
  • Owns all necessary hand tools and pouches.

Additional Carpenter 2 Responsibilities

Concrete Carpentry Specialty
  • Places rebar according to plans and specifications.
  • Performs layout activities related to specific tasks.
  • Applies advanced understanding of formwork systems and installation (columns/walls).
  • Installs post-tensioning (PT) accessories, cables, chairs, reinforcing, and blocking.
  • Performs advanced placement and finishing of concrete flatwork.
  • Identifies and understands construction details related to concrete carpentry.
Finish Carpentry Specialty
  • Quality installation of casework and countertops.
  • Quality installation of all types of running trim and wood paneling.
  • Quality installation of doors, hardware, and accessories.
  • Identifies, understands, and applies construction details related to finish carpentry.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform work accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of specific trades and scopes of work.
  • Ownership of all required carpentry hand tools and pouches.
  • Knowledge of all concrete tools and their use.
  • Basic understanding of layout principles and construction math.
  • Knowledge of setting forms for concrete (foundations, SOG, bulkheads).
  • Ability to complete assigned duties with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, both internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED (Preferred).
  • Apprentice and/or Vocational/Technical/Trade training (Preferred).
  • In lieu of formal education, equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in the specific trade (Required).
  • 2+ years of commercial construction experience (Preferred).

Working Environment

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet project needs.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • May require use of a respirator.
  • Must be comfortable working at projected heights, narrow workspaces, and various depths (e.g., trenches).

Frequent activities: Standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, carrying, swinging, reaching above shoulder, pushing, pulling, balancing.

Occasional activities: Sitting, viewing computer screen.

Specific environmental and physical requirements may vary by project type/location.
