Caregiver

About the Role

Assist with all matters of living assistance including personal hygiene and grooming, planning and preparing meals, light housekeeping, laundry, and helping clients cope with the routines of everyday life. Provide basic companionship and moral support.

• Assist in walking and transportation to doctor appointments, outdoor activities, shopping, and other excursions outside the home.
• Follow principles of infection control and respond rapidly and appropriately in emergency situations.
• Ensure clients' rights are adhered to, including the right to privacy and dignity, the right to accept or refuse care, and the right to confidentiality of the client's information.

Requirements

Personal assistance services may be performed by an unlicensed person who:

• Is at least 18 years of age and has demonstrated competency (when competency cannot be determined through education and experience).
• Is under 18 years of age but is a high school graduate or enrolled in a vocational educational program and has demonstrated competency to perform the tasks assigned.

Job Limitations

A caregiver will not function in a manner viewed as the practice of nursing according to the State’s Nursing Practice Act. Specifically, the caregiver will not:

• Administer medications.
• Take physicians' orders.
• Perform procedures requiring the training, knowledge, and skill of a licensed nurse.

• Must be able to stand, walk, squat, bend, kneel, reach, twist, push, and pull.
• Varied assistance is required depending on the ability of the client.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
