As a Career Counselor in the Career & Internship Center, you will provide individualized coaching, career exploration guidance, and professional development support that empowers students to make informed decisions about their education, careers, and future opportunities. This role is ideal for professionals who are passionate about mentorship, student success, and building confidence in others as they navigate important life and career transitions. Beyond one-on-one advising, this position plays an active role in shaping innovative career development programs, services, and initiatives that enhance student engagement and workforce readiness. Working collaboratively with campus partners and Career & Internship Center staff, you will help design, implement, and evaluate programs that connect students with valuable resources, experiential learning opportunities, internships, and employment pathways. This role provides the rewarding opportunity to combine counseling, program development, education, and leadership while contributing to UVU's mission of student success, community engagement, and lifelong learning.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels, coaches, and advises students and alumni regarding the career development process, including assisting students with career assessments, preparing career plans, preparing employment documents such as resumes, cover letters, reference pages, giving workshop and classroom presentations, etc.
  • Counsels and educates students on professional communication for interviewing and networking.
  • Coaches students on effective job search techniques.
  • Collaborates with internship coordinators, pre-professional advisors, employers, alumni, university administration, key contact school/college, and others to assist students seeking high-quality career positions/internships.
  • Coordinates multiple projects related to CIC goals and objectives.
  • Develops, plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates departmental functions and services in collaboration with other staff.
  • In collaboration and coordination with CIC marketing personnel, implements basic marketing methodology to reach target audiences.
  • Monitors, analyzes, and interprets state, regional, and national policies and trends, participates in professional development and training programs, and contributes to professional associations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in Counseling & Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or a related Social Science field and two years of full-time professional employment related to the summary of duties; consideration given to those currently in a master's program; or a bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience related to the summary of duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using client relationship management (CRM) software or career services software such as Handshake, Simplicity, or Grad Leaders.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of career counseling theory and practices.
  • Knowledge of college/university culture and job placement methodology.
  • Knowledge of current social, economic, and employment conditions and trends.
  • Knowledge of employer staffing practices, needs, and recruitment.
  • Knowledge of research and analysis methods and report writing and maintaining databases.
  • Basic Knowledge of project management practices.

Skills

  • Public speaking and group presentation skills are essential.
  • Sound interpersonal skills with a friendly and positive demeanor, with superior customer service skills.
  • Skills and technological competence using various applications to conduct work, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Student-centered, combined with impeccable teamwork skills.

Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written communications, as well as using electronic media and graphic presentation tools.
  • Ability to design workflow models, processes, and systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish positive relationships and to supervise and mentor staff and paraprofessionals if assigned.
  • Ability to find solutions to complex problems and manage priorities.
  • Ability to network with employers to establish beneficial relationships for students and alumni.
