Position Overview

The Career Center Student Specialists (CCSS) are student leaders who communicate University Career Center programming, services, and opportunities to students and to the University of Kansas community. CCSSs serve as a vital direct link between the UCC and students who are seeking career advising. They provide warm and friendly customer service at the UCC front desk, managing email, phone, and in-person inquiries. CCSSs also review resumes, video mock interviews, and represent the UCC during tabling and Career events. The ideal candidate will be dependable and reliable.

Responsibilities

  • Front Desk Operations & Student Support (60%): Greet students and visitors; answer phones and respond to emails; schedule appointments with career advisors; assist with Iris photobooth headshots and PHOG clothing closet; review resumes and video mock interviews; provide general customer service and referrals to career resources.
  • Events & Outreach (20%): Assist UCC staff with career fairs and programming; develop and participate in campus tabling events; represent the UCC at employer and career-related events; promote UCC services, programs, and Student Pathways.
  • Projects & Program Support (20%): Review and provide feedback on student-facing platforms (Handshake, Skills First, etc.); support a Student Pathway through projects and newsletter content; complete special assignments and ongoing program support tasks.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn, a positive attitude, and excellent customer service skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask as evidenced by application materials.
  • Prior experience demonstrating the capability to work effectively as part of a team.

Position Requirements

  • During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours.
  • For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
  • Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

  • Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
  • This is an hourly/non-exempt position.
  • A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
