About the role

Emergency Department (ED) techs assist nurses and doctors in caring for patients in hospital emergency departments. Supports patient care delivery by providing clerical services.

Location: Methodist Hospital, 8303 Dodge St, Omaha, NE

Responsibilities

• Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, ensuring understanding and comfort level of treatment.
• Exhibits excellent interpersonal relations with patients, co-workers, physicians, and guests to ensure effective communication.
• Responds to patient needs promptly and courteously; obtains feedback from patients and visitors regarding their hospital experience.
• Communicates patient issues to the appropriate staff and maintains a positive attitude while responding to requests in a timely and accurate manner.
• Actively participates in report process.
• Collects blood specimens by venipuncture or skin puncture, including microbiological specimens, following proper policies and procedures.
• Consistently performs correct patient identification, collects appropriate specimen amounts, labels specimens, and transports them to the laboratory in a timely manner.
• Accurately performs computer operations and record keeping pertaining to patient information and phlebotomy duties.
• Assists with maintaining an environment conducive to patient comfort and recovery, including distributing linen and supplies, and keeping the unit neat and tidy.
• Performs other duties as delegated, including medication and blood pickup, under the direction of the Service Leader and/or RN.
• Answers call lights within 5 minutes.
• Assists with or participates in certain procedures as directed by the RN, including patient transfers, discharges, weighing patients, and taking vital signs.
• Communicates any changes in patient's condition to RN in a timely fashion.
• Assists patients in activities as directed by the RN, including ambulation, transfers, and transportation to other areas.
• Performs Electrocardiograms (EKGs) on adolescents through geriatric patients, ensuring quality standards and timely interpretation.
• Maintains appropriate logs and files of EKGs for accurate billing and medical records.
• Assists patients with elimination as directed by the RN, including providing bedpans, urinals, pericare, enemas, and recording output.
• Follows the 4 Rights of Delegation: right task, right person, right communication, and right feedback.
• Provides assistance with special projects, orientation, training new personnel, and performance improvement.
• Utilizes information systems to facilitate communication and documentation.
• Promotes a positive impression and welcoming environment through customer service, including greeting patients, visitors, and staff courteously.
• Maintains a safe, clean, and neat work environment; ensures no food at reception area and covered drinks.
• Handles general communication duties, including answering telephones promptly and professionally, maintaining call/phone systems, distributing mail, and operating office equipment.
• Maintains privacy and confidentiality of patients and staff information.
• Assists with maintenance of electronic medical records, including establishing initial patient charts, processing charts upon dismissal, and scanning medical documents.

Requirements

• Completion of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program preferred.
• Participation in mandatory in-services and continuing education programs.
• Previous cleaning, food service, and/or patient-related experience preferred.
• One to three months on-the-job experience to learn hospital procedures and work routines.
• Student nurse must have completed first clinical rotation.
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.

• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills for effective communication with physicians, patients, family, and team members.
• Skills in preparing reports, performing calculations, and keeping records.
• Medical terminology preferred.
• Ability to utilize a variety of computer applications.
• Excellent grammar, punctuation, spelling, and presentation layout skills.
• Knowledge of office procedures and principles of record keeping.
• Ability to read medical records and type 30 to 40 wpm with accuracy.

Schedule

6:45pm to 7:15am, 3 shifts per week, rotating weekends and holidays.
