Cardiothoracic Surgery Instructor, Department of Surgery (M67840)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key operative leader in the evaluation and surgical recovery of donor organs.
  • Independently perform heart and lung procurements in collaboration with national organ-sharing networks.
  • Work closely with transplant physicians, coordinators, and perfusion teams to ensure optimal graft quality and seamless communication throughout the procurement process.
  • Assist in the recipient surgery, share call coverage, inpatient management of pre- and post-transplant patients, and participate in the cardiac surgery, ECMO call schedule.
  • Manage complex cardiothoracic conditions, support mechanical circulatory support patients, and provide timely operative and critical care interventions as needed.
  • Teach cardiothoracic surgery CT surgery residents, general surgery residents, and medical and undergraduate students.
  • Mentor cardiothoracic fellows with graded surgery responsibilities.
  • Participate in clinical research and trials.
  • Serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, and in a professional capacity in their field.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated training in cardiothoracic surgery and thoracic transplantation.
  • Virginia state licensure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence.
  • Effective skills in managing conflict.
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education, and clinical research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.
