Job Summary

Regarded as a clinical expert and role model, this position applies the nursing process and evidence-based practice to manage complex care needs. They serve as a resource to physicians, nurses, patients, and family members, and demonstrate foresight in nursing care impacts on patient outcomes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Staff and Preceptor Education/Development
  • Applies principles of adult learning to plan and conduct educational sessions.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in teaching and precepting skills.
  • Facilitates development of unit preceptors including effective delegation and interpersonal skills.
  • Affords assistance in the development of staff portfolios.
  • Affords assistance in conducting annual educational needs assessment.
  • Affords assistance in providing opportunities for staff to acquire necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
  • Coordinates unit based clinical orientation program for new staff, students, and preceptors.
  • Works with preceptors to individualize unit orientation.
  • Affords assistance in developing annual competency checklists.
  • Affords assistance in meeting the education and training needs of staff.
  • Affords assistance in developing clinical leadership and critical thinking skills in others.
  • Mentors new existing staff by sharing knowledge, skills, and departmental processes.

Operational, Quality, and Compliance

  • Identifies the need for revision and evaluates the effectiveness of operational forms.
  • Provides and coordinates the resources needed within the unit to provide optimal patient outcomes.
  • Models time management skills through example.
  • Ensures compliance and adherence with stated policies and procedures for the unit.
  • Remains informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practice.
  • Assumes a staff level leadership and resource role with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Contributes to evaluating the use of resources and to cost containment activities.
  • Respects and maintains confidential information.

Patient/Family Education and Communication

  • Integrates patient/family education activities into unit based staff development and continuing education programs.
  • Collaborates with management and patient/family advisory council to develop standardized teaching materials for patient and family learning needs.
  • Models effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Effectively elicits and integrates cultural beliefs and values from patients and integrates these into overall patient management and education.
  • Utilizes patient and staff satisfaction feedback as a factor in designing, refining, and revising education programs.
  • Demonstrates and role models effective communication skills.

Commitments

  • Maintains Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments.
  • Achieves points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position.
  • Completes VIP or EBP Project.
  • Achieves points/electives and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position.
  • Completes formal preceptor training workshop.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience: 2 years of recent nursing experience AND a minimum of 2 years of experience in the area of concentration.
  • Licensure: A valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
  • Certification: 1. BLS certification 2. ACLS may be required for certain departments, post hire 3. Additional certifications may be required based on department and specialty 4. Must complete UNE criteria requirements within nine (9) months of promotion or hire, including completion of Enhancing your Communication HLC#6488. 5. If completing virtual care activities that may include multi-state practice, an active compact/multistate license (eNLC) is required within 60 days of hire.

Physical Requirements

(Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

  • Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required.
