About the Role

The Cardiac Ultrasound Technologist performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures, operates ultrasound equipment, and supports educational presentations for physicians and technical staff. This role involves preparing patients, conducting tests, and ensuring diagnostic quality echocardiograms for patients of all ages.

Responsibilities

• Performs echocardiograms, including preparing patients, conducting tests, and providing data/results to cardiologists with minimal supervision.
• Prepares preliminary reports for reading physicians as scheduled.
• Performs diagnostic-quality echocardiograms with thorough interrogation of cardiac and extracardiac anatomy for patients from newborn to adult.
• Conducts quantitative measurements from M-Mode, 2D, and Doppler studies.
• Assists healthcare practitioners with transesophageal, epicardial, and intracardiac echocardiographic studies.
• Independently recognizes simple and most complex congenital heart defects.
• Performs fetal echocardiograms as required.
• Applies organizational skills to manage testing for both inpatients and outpatients, including completing preliminary reports for physician review.
• Identifies indications and limitations of exams and procedures.
• Orders and stocks necessary supplies and inventory.
• Assists with special projects, policies, procedures, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Evaluates new equipment and procedures, making recommendations for improvement.
• Stocks linen and supplies, ensuring rooms and equipment are clean and ready for use.
• Maintains continuing medical education hours per ARDMS and IAC requirements.
• Attends echocardiography lab quality assurance reviews and catheterization conferences to enhance knowledge of congenital heart disease.
• Performs and maintains quality control and preventative maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
• Engages in quality improvement activities for echocardiography studies in accordance with IAC standards.
• Participates in in-services related to cardiology.
• May research, present, and participate in educational presentations.
• May assist with data collection for research projects and performance improvement.
• Assists with precepting new staff members under general guidance.

Requirements

• Registered through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a medical sonographer or cardiac sonographer.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider certification.
