Responsibilities

  • Record routine, emergent, and specialty electrocardiograms (EKGs) for patients ranging in age from newborn to geriatric, ensuring the quality of tracings.
  • Download EKGs from cart to MUSE EKG Computer System.
  • Deliver cardiac rhythm strips from the telemetry station to nursing units and post them in specified locations.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties related to cardiac monitoring, including troubleshooting telemetry transmitter packs (e.g., replacing worn electrodes, changing batteries, changing wires, retrieving misplaced telemetry transmitters and cardiac pacers).
  • Observe cardiac rhythms and pulse oximetry readings displayed on monitors, interpret these rhythms in a timely manner, and communicate changes to nursing units as emergent or non-emergent.
  • Serve as a preceptor for newly hired staff and a resource for current Monitor Technicians (Level I and II), nursing staff, physicians, students, and other healthcare providers.
  • Present at least one educational offering annually to the Cardiac Monitoring/EKG staff (subject to supervisor approval; may be waived for other approved projects).

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year as a full-time Monitor Technician II at AMC.
  • Successful completion of the AMC Preceptor Program.
  • Successful completion of a program on Advanced Interpretation of Cardiac Rhythms (e.g., Capital District Consortium Program or equivalent).
  • Not currently on corrective action.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Ability to read documents such as requisitions and document on established forms.
  • Ability to communicate cooperatively and effectively with clients, including children.
  • Basic math skills (addition of whole numbers and decimals) and ability to compute heart rate.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks (e.g., emergent vs. non-emergent requests).
  • Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
