About the role

The role involves performing routine and specialized patient laboratory testing, obtaining laboratory specimens, processing results, maintaining equipment, and participating in various quality assurance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and specialized patient laboratory testing.
  • Obtains laboratory specimens from patients as needed.
  • Posts laboratory results to their proper destination.
  • Processes microbiology cultures and other specimens as needed.
  • Follows established procedures for quality control performance and documentation.
  • Reports discrepancies to the Laboratory Manager or designee.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly or as needed maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
  • Performs calibration of equipment as required.
  • Troubleshoots problems with instruments, equipment, reagents and patient specimens.
  • Documents situation appropriately in department log and notifies the Laboratory Manager or designee.
  • Maintains work area, cleans bench, restocks supplies and notifies manager of low stock.
  • Participates in new lot correlation studies, proficiency testing, computer validation, procedure updates and accreditation readiness as needed.
  • Participates in orientation and training of students and new laboratory employees.
  • Performs DOT and non-DOT urine collections and BAT tests when requested following the established guidelines.
  • Sets up for and participates in special projects during periods of lower than normal work volume.

Requirements

  • MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP) or equivalent certification within 12 months of hire.
  • BLS certified within 60 days of hire.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Science program and registered or registry eligible.
  • Good communication skills, accurate writing and spelling, ability to reason and problem solve.
  • Computer skills.
