Captain

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the coordination, supervision, and direction of a correctional security program, maintaining security, control, and custody of inmates, complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and facilitating the successful operation of a state adult correctional facility.

Responsibilities

• Covers typical functions such as coordinating and supervising correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; serving as a shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a medium or maximum security facility or as the chief of security in a minimum security facility; serving as commander of a correctional emergency response team; scheduling training exercises and coordinating activities; conducting special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts; coordinating and supervising security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband; preparing daily work schedules for security personnel; preparing and maintaining appropriate records concerning employees and residents; conducting inspections of assigned staff at beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; making periodic inspections of posts to assure that they are properly maintained; preparing administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift; acting as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; providing information and file changes; arranging court appearances; responsible for SMU and/or restricted housing, depending on facility security level; serving as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participating in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations; providing a leadership role to subordinate correctional officers and correctional security managers; completing performance reviews for subordinates, administering progressive discipline, monitoring and approving officers' time, and clearing exceptions; enforcing institutional rules and regulations; maintaining security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing, and/or walking.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Competencies

• Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques;
• Staffing patterns and scheduling the distribution of staff and work assignments;
• Methods and objectives of discipline required for inmates under restraint;
• The psychology of inmate behavior;
• The use and care of firearms;
• Proper restraint methods and techniques;
• The fundamentals of English usage;
• Basic math;
• Report writing techniques.

Education And Experience

• Four years of experience in correctional or security work for a government agency or private corrections agency;
• Thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma acquired from an accredited high school or GED equivalent testing program and graduation from a training course conducted by or approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training either prior to employment or during the first six (6) months of employment.

Special Requirements

• Be of good moral character;
• Satisfactory completion of an adequate training program for correctional officers and guards, as prescribed and approved by the State Board of Corrections;
• Satisfactory completion of a physical in keeping with the conditions of the job description on an annual basis and along the guidelines as established by the Department of Corrections.
